Lady Windermere's Fan

A satirical comedy by Oscar Wilde.
Directed by Joan Beresford,
31st January - 7th February 2009 @ 7:45pm

First produced in London in 1892 , this was Oscar Wilde’s first great stage success. Like many of his comedies, it is a biting satire on the morals of Victorian society, particularly marriage.

Lady Windermere discovers that her husband may be having an affair. She confronts him, but he instead invites the other woman, Mrs Erlynne, to her birthday ball. Angered by her husband's unfaithfulness, Lady Windermere leaves for another lover. After discovering what has transpired, Mrs Erlynne follows Lady Windermere and attempts to persuade her to return to her husband. She sacrifices herself and her reputation in order to save Lady Windermere's marriage.

With typical Wilde humour, larger-than-life characters, and an involving and entertaining story, this is a great way to open our 2009 season.
